What's a festival without great group rides?  The Fat Tire Festival will be full of group rides meaning there will be rides for all skill levels.  Take a look at the routes below and pick your perfect route!

FRIDAY NIGHT GROUP RIDES

NIGHT RIDE GROUP C

 

Route:  Flow through Baby Bear and Momma Bear, then to a more difficult Papa Bear where midway through you will begin to see more climbing You will then return on Upper Papa Bear, Upper Momma Bear, and the remainder of Baby Bear.   This loop is shown as a RED highlight trail on the guided ride map available above.

NIGHT RIDE GROUP B

 

Route:  Flow through Baby and Upper Momma Bear, then to a more difficult Upper Papa Bear where midway through you will begin to climb (RED highlight until F then follow PURPLE) and continue to do so until you reach the top of Cassidy.  Here, you will turn right (ORANGE) and traverse through a much more technical trail, Rock Slot. Lower your seat post and descend down the much loved Bomb Dog, all the way to Baby Bear back to the trailhead.

NIGHT RIDE GROUP A

 

Route: Ride the fast and flowy Baby Bear and continue on to Momma Bear. Then get on Upper Papa Bear and climb through Cassidy (RED to F and then PURPLE), all the way to the top of the mountain on Talladega (YELLOW). Mid-way through Talladega, your climbing stops and the long flowy return to the trailhead awaits you.  You'll ride through the famous "Rabbit Hole" intersection, taking Trillium, then Chilhowee to Goldilocks (YELLOW back to PURPLE). You will get back on Upper Papa Bear (RED) traveling the opposite direction as before, to Upper Momma Bear, and finally Baby Bear.

RIDE GROUP E - KIDS AND FAMILY RIDE

1 MILES 50 FT ELEVATION (ESTIMATE)

 

Route:  Flow through the Baby Bear Loop starting and returning to the trailhead.

RIDE GROUP D - THREE BEARS LOOP

7 MILES 600 FT ELEVATION (ESTIMATE)

 

Route:  Flow through Baby Bear and Momma Bear, then to a more difficult Papa Bear where midway through you will begin to see more climbing You will then return on Upper Papa Bear, Upper Momma Bear, and the remainder of Baby Bear.   This loop is shown as a RED highlight trail on the guided ride map available above.

RIDE GROUP C - WOMENS ONLY LOOP

9 MILES 700 FT ELEVATION (ESTIMATE)

 

Route:  Flow through Baby Bear and Momma Bear, then to a more difficult Papa Bear where midway through you will begin to climb (RED highlight until F then follow PURPLE) and continue to do so until you reach the top of Cassidy  .  Here you will return down the mountain on one of the best flow trails Coldwater has to offer, Goldilocks, then stay left at each intersection back to the trailhead via Upper Papa Bear (connect back to RED highlight), Upper Momma Bear, and Baby Bear.

RIDE GROUP B - XC LOOP (WITH POSSIBLE GAZZA ALTERNATE ROUTE)

13 MILES 1,000 FT ELEVATION (ESTIMATE)

 

Route:  This is the "XC" race route from USA Cycling held a few times each year.  Flow through Baby and Momma Bear, then to a more difficult Papa Bear where midway through you will begin to climb (RED highlight until F then follow PURPLE) and continue to do so until you reach the top of Cassidy. Here, you will turn right (follow ORANGE highlight) and traverse through a much more technical trail, Rock Slot. Midway through Rock Slot, you have an option to continue on, or take the rocky black diamond trail Gazza.  If you select the Gazza option, see the alternate description below.  Otherwise,  lower your seat post and descend down the much loved Bomb Dog, all the way to Baby Bear (Connect back to RED highlight), and back to the trailhead.

 

 

RIDE GROUP A - FLOW LOOP

16 MILES 1,400 FT ELEVATION (ESTIMATE)

 

Route:  This is the "XC" race route from USA Cycling held a few times each year.  Flow through Baby Bear and Momma Bear, then to Upper Papa Bear where  you'll begin climbing and continue to do so through Cassidy (RED highlight until F then follow PURPLE). Now it's off to Talladega where the climbing (follow YELLOW highlight) is a little more technical, but very short. Midway through you hit the highest point on Coldwater Mountain and start going down. Your next stop is the famous "Rabbit Hole" intersection. You'll stay left, taking Trillium - which, to many, is considered the best flow trail in Alabama - continuing downhill on Hare, all the way to the lower trailhead ("Anniston trailhead"). After a break, climb back up on Tortoise (stay on YELLOW highlight), then to the less steep, but still climbing Power Trip, and on to Chilhowee. You'll be revisiting the "Rabbit Hole" here from the opposite direction, but continuing on Chilhowee (left), where it turns into rocky flowy goodness. Next, you will turn right returning down the mountain on another great flow trail, Goldilocks (Follow PURPLE), on to Upper Papa Bear (Red highlight), then stay left at each intersection back to the trailhead via Upper Momma Bear, and Baby Bear.

GAZZA ALTERNATE ROUTE OPTION

 

Route:  From the XC Loop Route desciption above, you will take a left midway through Rock Slot onto the very rocky black diamond, Gazza (BLACK highlight trail). At the end of Gazza you will take a left on Bomb Dog (ORANGE highlight) and continue the route above.
